The biggest risk with any custom software is that the author may, for some reason, no longer be in a position to look after it and make any necessary changes, or may start to charge exorbitant rates for doing so. The customer has no rights to the source and therefore can not go else where.

Open Source attempts to break that scenario. The source is freely available and any body can make changes to it with the consequence that there is no dependency on the original author. In addition this means that the development can be achieved by collaboration of interested parties, the collective skills and experience of the group then being available to the benefit of all.Further this reduces risk because should one party drop out the other will be here to maintain the software.
